What is Brand Photography and why do you need it?

So you have your logo, and you’ve chosen your colours and your fonts. Maybe a headshot too. Sounds like your brand is all set and you’re ready to roll, right? But is this all you need for your brand to stand out? If you’re reading this, you already know that your brand is so much more than that. It is your visual identity, which is made up of all the elements that represent your business, including your photography. But what is brand photography, and why do you need it for your business?

What is brand photography?

Most people immediately think of corporate headshots when they hear personal brand photography. And for many businesses that is the only thing they think to show the world. But suppose you want your brand to really resonate with your audience. Headshots are just one piece of the branding photography puzzle.

Your full set of personal branding images shows your personality and helps your clients get to know you. They show them what they can expect when they work with you and begins to build trust. Used around your website, social media and printed materials, your brand photography helps them build a relationship with you even before they get in touch.

To truly tell the story of your business and help it look its best, you’ll need a range of imagery that will work for you and your marketing strategy, and stand the test of time.

And brand photography is just that. A complete set of consistent, well-crafted images that represent your business and your visual identity through the use of colours, tone, props and more. Your image set will include photos of:

  • you
  • your team
  • your products
  • your space
  • on-brand textures
  • the way you work and interact with people
  • and any other things that represent and tell the story of your business.

Why do you need brand photography for your business?

First impressions count

Depending on your clients’ demographic, they will form an opinion in just 11-50 milliseconds, so first impressions really count. Professional, consistent, good quality branding photography will help you impress them fast. It will also show potential clients that you value high-quality content and appreciate attention to detail.

In our fast-paced world, we all make snap judgements all the time. Well-presented products and services catch our eye and make us more likely to buy them.

Photography makes your brand more relatable and human

People buy from people. In an ever more technological world, this has never been more true. We seek out people and businesses we connect with on a personal level, follow them on social media, and eventually buy from them because of how they resonate with us.

By using your brand photography throughout your off and online presence, website and social media, potential clients will relate to you so much better and see the face behind the business. They’ll imagine themselves working with you, see the real people they will be working with, and get a glimpse into the way you work.

Photos that feature people take your products and services from impersonal, nice-to-have, and theoretical, to real, achievable, and desirable for the people that view them.

Brand photography increases your engagement

Images are simply more engaging than words. According to this Hubspot study social media posts with images see 2.3x more engagement than those without images, while image-heavy articles double their social media shares and likes. 65% of marketing execs say that photos, videos and other visual content are crucial to communicating your brand story. Pins that show a product or service being used are 67% more likely to drive sales through Pinterest. Tweets with images were retweeted 150% more than tweets without images.

Of course, it’s not all about social media. But there is no doubt that good quality, on-brand photography is key to your brand’s success.

And finally… photography increases brand consistency and recognition

Brand consistency is key. Using all your visual elements consistently across your marketing channels will make your customer journey infinitely more straightforward, and they will be 3-4 times more likely to buy from you as a result.

It also makes your brand infinitely more recognisable. This, in turn, will help with word of mouth and referrals once people fall in love with your brand, driving even more business your way.

In short, as great as your brand and your products and services are, having your own, unique and on-brand photography will help to bring your brand elements together. It will elevate your brand, making it look the best it can be.
